The spiral is the whole screen. The present rides a ring that nearly fills it; what is still to come winds inward, shrinking toward the centre, and what has just passed swells outward until it leaves the screen. There are four gestures:
Turn the Digital Crown — zoom in and out. If you have switched on Hour & Day in Settings, keeping it turning also steps between the time modes.
Drag up or down — scrub forward and back through time.
Double tap — return to now.
Press and hold — open Settings.
A small label naming the current mode fades in while you are interacting and fades out again shortly after you stop. That is deliberate: at rest the screen is nothing but the spiral.
By default a turn of the spiral is one minute: sixty seconds, a dot each. Two coarser readings of the same spiral are there if you want them — switch on Hour & Day in Settings and the crown also steps into Hour, sixty minutes to a turn, and Day, twenty-four hours to a turn. They are off to begin with, so until you ask for them the crown is only a zoom and the spiral is always seconds.
Normally watchOS returns to the watch face a minute or two after your wrist drops, which cuts short the one thing this app is for. Press and hold to open Settings, then tap Begin sitting. The app then stays frontmost for up to an hour, so lowering and raising your wrist brings you back to the spiral rather than to the watch face.
If Always On is enabled on your watch, under Settings › Display & Brightness, the spiral also stays visible while your wrist is down and the marker keeps moving. How often it redraws is the watch's decision, not ours, and it slows down the longer your wrist stays lowered — so expect the marker to step rather than sweep. With Always On off the screen simply turns off until you raise your wrist. The session keeps running either way.
A session never restarts itself. When the hour is up you get a gentle tap and the app goes back to behaving normally. You can end a session early from Settings at any time.
Settings can turn off the spiral line, the ticks, the centre point, the time needle and the marker gradient independently, so you can take the display down to as little as you like.
Invert flips the whole palette the other way: dark strokes on white instead of white on black. It costs more battery than the default, because the display is OLED and a black pixel is simply switched off, so the usual screen is mostly unlit and an inverted one is not.
Why are there no numbers?
That is the point of the app. Present shows you where you are in the current minute, hour or day as a position rather than a figure to read. If you want the digits, the system clock is still at the top of the screen.
Can I hide the clock at the top?
Not hide it, no. watchOS always draws its own clock in the status bar and no app is allowed to remove it, not even for the duration of a sitting; the private API that would is deliberately unused, because it risks breaking on future versions of watchOS. Switching on Invert does make it effectively vanish, but by a different route: that clock is always pure white, so against a white background there is simply nothing left to see.
Why does the screen go dark when I lower my wrist during a sitting?
Because Always On is turned off on your watch. The session itself keeps running — raise your wrist and you are back on the spiral rather than the watch face. To keep the spiral visible with your wrist down, turn on Settings › Display & Brightness › Always On. Low Power Mode and Theater Mode both switch it off again.
Does Present record my sitting to the Health app?
No. Present has no access to HealthKit at all, so sessions are not logged as Mindful Minutes and nothing appears in Health. If recording matters to you, run Apple's Mindfulness app alongside Present.
What does Present do to my battery?
In Minute mode the seconds marker sweeps continuously, which costs more than a static screen. With your wrist down and no session running, the spiral repaints only once a minute. A sitting session keeps the screen lit and the marker moving for up to an hour — the watch stretches the redraw interval out as your wrist stays down, but the screen stays on — so expect it to use roughly what any hour-long active app would.
Do I need my iPhone?
No. Present runs entirely on the watch and needs no companion iPhone app and no network connection.
Does it work with VoiceOver?
Yes. The spiral is a single element that speaks the current time. Swipe up or down to change mode, and the rotor offers "Reset to now", "Settings" and "Begin sitting" / "End sitting". With Reduce Motion on, Minute mode repaints once a second instead of sweeping — the marker already moves in whole seconds, so nothing is lost.
What do I need to run it?
An Apple Watch running watchOS 10.2 or later.
What data do you collect?
None. Nothing is collected, stored, tracked or shared, and everything happens locally on your watch. See the Privacy Policy for the full statement.
